FYI, this seems to me to be an excellent summary of the highlights of the
event.

Best,

Dear ICOMM17 Guests,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your attendance of
the Intercommunity 2017 event in CERN <https://home.cern/>’s Globe of
Science & Innovation on the 19th September.

Your attendance is very important to us and we hope that you found value in
our panel sessions as well as made some new contacts during the meeting,
not to mention learning about Dark matter from our fabulous host’s at CERN.

Below is a short summary of the main points and takeaways from the session:

*General take-aways:*

- The focus of the discussions were centered around privacy, more
than security

- The problems around privacy that we see will scale, and so must
the solutions to keep up

- There needs to be more questioning in the use of IoT – Why am I
sharing this data that you are collecting? Consumers needs to ask why – and
realize that they are the product.

- Market forces themselves are unlikely to solve the IoT security
and privacy challenges.

*Key take-aways*

- Your personal data is precisely that, YOUR data. You need to be
at “the centre of the Universe” – we need a “cyber bill of rights”

- There needs to be a focus on education, and on informing users.
Both about the technology, but also about the responsibilities. These are
problems we have today – so in essence nothing new – but the problem will
increase and scale.

- Educated users can make more informed decisions. Does this
device need to be directly connected to the global network? What is the
trade-off in sharing this data?

- We need ethics to be part of the discussion. How IoT services
operate, and how they are deployed.

- Multistakeholder solutions are needed, but there is a challenge
in channeling the collective intelligence to solve the issue.

- There is a question about governance that needs to be solved. Is
the current mechanisms for IG enough, or do we need to think about new
governance frameworks to efficiently address the challenges of IoT? We
should tackle this challenge, but also see it as an opportunity to get it
right.

As you also heard, we recently launched the Internet Futures Report which
we encourage you to read as well as share with parties who may be
interested in the work of the Internet Society.

The report can be found here: https://future.internetsociety.org

Once again thank you for your time and joining us for the Intercommunity
2017.

See you on the Internet, or here in Geneva!

Brgds

Howie
