On occasion of the World Youth Skills Day on 15 July, UNESCO in partnership with the Autonomous University of Barcelona is calling on youth all over the world to share with us what they think about issues that contribute to their wellbeing and global peace by completing a survey designed specifically for girls and boys between the ages of 14 and 25.

UNESCO invites youth to share thoughts by completing the questionnaire below. It is divided into three parts and should be completed over a three-day period.

Please do not complete this questionnaire if you are enrolled in the ongoing UNESCO and Athabasca University massively open online media and information literacy course.

If you are a young girl or boy between the ages 14 and 25 years this call is for you.

  *   Youth Questionnaire Day One<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Youth_Questionnaire_DAY1_media_information_literacy>
  *   Youth Questionnaire Day Two<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Youth_Questionnaire_DAY2_media_information_literacy>
  *   Youth Questionnaire Day Three<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Youth_Questionnaire_DAY3_media_information_literacy>

Your participation is crucial and will help to inform UNESCO’s design and expansion of its media and information literacy programme globally. Please see details about prizes below.

Media and information literacy affords youth with skills or competencies to effectively and critically engage with media and technology, participating in and advocating for ethical use of information and media, free expression and access to information, privacy, gender equality, intercultural and interreligious dialogue, global citizenship and hate content online.

Share your thoughts on these issues by completing the survey.

UNESCO values young people. The voices of youth count. Youth are not only the future of tomorrow. They are now. They are today. They are contributing to change and peace in this generation.

Please read the introductory paragraph at the beginning at the questionnaire carefully before starting.

There will be a draw for two prizes in the form of a two-week fellowship to visit a university in Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe or other region of the world to be announced. The prize will be offered, by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, to two young persons who fully complete all three parts of the questionnaire.

Literacy is Freedom – media and information literacy is freedom to explore, engage and self-empower. On the first commemoration of World Youth Skills Day (15 July) UNESCO calls on stakeholders globally to reflect on and to promote competencies for youth that are relevant to the 21st Century.

Download the Women on Homepage flyer<http://www.unesco.org/new/fileadmin/MULTIMEDIA/HQ/CI/CI/pdf/news/flyer_wmn_july_2015.pdf>. Circulate it in social media. Participate in the suggested actions by promoting girls, women and boys on your homepage.

More than any time in history girls and boys are learning about themselves and the world around them more through media and technologies. Global phenomena such as privacy, youth radicalization, hate speech and new opportunities to engage in positive social change are mediated by media and technology.

Media and information literacy competencies are integral to all other 21st century competencies, be they technical competencies or social competencies, such as cultural literacy, global citizenship, financial literacy, health literacy, science literacy or environmental literacy.

Youth skills or youth competencies have become urgent for their existence and survival in 21st century.

As one young person who is enrolled in the UNESCO and Athabasca University massive open online course (MOOC) in media and information literacy and intercultural dialogue notes:

“You know this course is changing my life, my perception, and correcting certain myopic view of mine. I am just so glad and I so wish I can educate every child so they won't grow with certain stereotyped perception and ignorance. (Iredumare Ojengbede Opeyemi)”

UNESCO invites youth organizations and all actors to join us in stimulating awareness of the importance of media and information competencies to empower girls and boys by participation in the Women on Homepage initiative.

The World Youth Skills Day was established by the UN General Assembly on November 11, 2014, highlighting importance of youth skill development at global level.

Subject: [kictanet] Digital Literacy Programme Execution Plan Unveiled

Listers,
The Ministry of ICT today has updated the public on the Digital Literacy Programme through a press briefing at the Ministry offices.

At the press briefing, Dr Fred Matiang’i announced that the programme, will be run through a multiplicity of government agencies. The Ministry of ICT, through the Cabinet Secretary, will chair the oversight committee, while ICT Authority, CEO, Victor Kyalo will oversee the project technical implementation committee.

The meeting was also attended by CS, Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi, CS, Industrialization and Enterprise Development, Adan Mohamed, Attorney General, Prof Githu Muigai and ICT Authority CEO, Mr Victor Kyalo. Others were Presidential Delivery Unit, Secretary for Delivery, Mr Nzioka Waita, KNUT Chairmain, Mudzo Nzili and representatives from KEPSHA (Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association), Kenya School of Curriculum Development (KICD) and Rural Electrification Authority (REA).

Dr Matiang’i said that an inclusive and holistic approach will be adopted. Already, a framework that defines the ecosystem for effective delivery has been developed. Four (4) pillars that are critical to the project delivery have been identified as:
1)      Development of digital content.
2)      Power supply to schools
3) Teachers are adequately trained and prepared on use of ICTs
4) Content is accessible through multiple platforms (devices).

The programme will work closely with institutions of higher learning and Kenya innovators and developers. Some aspects of the programme have already been delivered. This includes power to schools, digital content and teacher training.

The cost of the first phase of the project is estimated at 17 billion shillings and will deliver 1.2 million devices in the next two years to cover all public primary schools. The pilot phase of 150 schools is planned for September, 2015.

This follows a recent directive by the Office of the President that the Ministry of ICT heads the programme.
