I did an interview with Jamie Anderson, a telecoms strategy professor and
advisor (who's worked with both Zain and Bharti) a while ago:

http://www.ratio-magazine.com/201006103363/Africa-Agenda/Will-Bharti-Airtels-Business-Model-Translate-to-Sub-Saharan-Africa.html

Bharti's business model is based on extensive outsourcing, which is
supported by India's vast outsourcing industry. So one of key challenges in
transferring it to sub-Saharan Africa was to find partners who can work with
them in all their African markets. Looks like they have found one for the
technology side!
