On the question of why we should discourage fake news..... I think it is
because we risk raising a generation of the disinformed who may never learn
to think critically. Have you met friends on Facebook who comment to say,
"I like your post but too long" or "that post is too complicated", " the
Swahili is too sanifu". How will a generation of such lead the nation?

As Monyango mentions about the click economy model where people earn money
according to the quantity of clicks on a link ..... I think this has been
misused by the fake news industry to target those who are too easily
manipulated by the sensational.

People can learn to distinguish or verify news if good old news sites
maintain trust with readers. This should be a wake up call to media houses
of good repute- pick the real news side and stick with it. More returns in
the long run as you will be contributing to a click economy based on
quality not quantity. And if good old news sites insist on being fifty
fifty, then individuals who are trusted by society take up the space. I
don't think validation should be enforced by law.

attention another site might pick it up, write that story as though it's
true and may not link back to the original fake news website.

The Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet) is a multi-stakeholder platform for
people and institutions interested and involved in ICT policy and
regulation. The network aims to act as a catalyst for reform in the ICT
sector in support of the national aim of ICT enabled growth and development.
