Allow me to play devil's advocate:
"So before you make that tweet, retweet, post, blog, forward (with the
cynical ender - *forwarded as received*) weigh your options and consider
the ramifications. Is it for the greater good? Is it for some macho reason
of 'being the first to tweet it', have you in anyway verified the
information? Is it of import to society?"
There are people who are paid by third parties to tweet, retweet, post,
blog and forward. The only option they have to weigh is whether they will
get paid to do so and the answer is often yes.
Is it for the greater good? Yes, theirs! Because they will get paid. Is it
for some macho reason of 'being the first to tweet it'? Again, yes. Citizen
journalism is, at its heart, still good old journalism. The citizen
journalist known for being the first to get the 'scoop' ends up at the top
of the food chain and gets paid the most.
"Have you in anyway verified the information?" Tabloids still exist,
meaning that citizen journalism tabloids can and will thrive.
My suggestion and question: Any individuals being paid by a third party to
tweet/blog/vlog should add a disclaimer to their profile or their post,
telling the reader this. But will this be infringing on their privacy
rights?
