  Dear Phyllis,

The ICT Authority has begun digitizing the photo library at the Kenya News
Agency. The photo library collection dates back to 1936 and documents
Kenyan life through the decades. The rich collection is a national treasure
but remains underutilized.

Digitizing the collection will make the photos and videos available to
everybody to view online. Easy access to these historical photos will
especially benefit the creative industry and researchers. From fashion
designers to filmmakers--access to visual history of Kenya will serve to
inspire and enrich their creations. For personal family research or
professional cultural research, the online catalogue will be an invaluable
reference source.

It is our pleasure to announce the scanning of the photos will kick-off
this June. The project is assigned under the Deputy Director for
Information and has been structured in four project areas:

*1. Renovation of KNA Library: *Build archive-quality public-access
facility to hold the collection for posterity.

(*Managed by Ministry of Planning, Civil Works*)

*2. Intellectual Property and Policy: *Assessment of the status of
Intellectual Property Rights of KNA, developing the licensing model and
drafting a policy for KNA.

(*Consultancy awarded to Gerry Gitonga in September 2014*)

*3. Digitization:* Organize, scan, catalog, and digitize KNA multi-media
content.

(*Contract awarded to Next Technologies Ltd in May 2015*)

4. *Multimedia Management System and eCommerce Website:* Install a system
for KNA to store and retrieve their photos and videos and build an
eCommerce website for customers to access and purchase KNA's multimedia
content.

*Forum: How can KNA Photos make money? The Role of Intellectual Property in
Government *

We invite you to a half-day forum to explore the opportunities and
challenges copyright offers government. Gerry Gitonga, IP Lawyer and
consultant for the KNA Digitization Project will share his findings on the
IP Status of the KNA Photos and the options available to government for
commercialization of the collections.

 *In this section we will answer some the most frequently asked questions
about the project. *

*Q. When will the photos be available online?*

*Answer: *The KNA digitization drive aims to scan all multimedia assets
(photos, slides, video and audio) by December 2015. The collection is
estimated at 500,000 photos. The scanning process will generate a high
resolution digital copy of the asset. A low resolution watermarked version
will be made available to the public through a dedicated website. Purchase
of high res copies for commercial use will be built-in to the website. The
eCommerce website is scheduled to go live by December 2015.

The digitization drive is made up of several activities including adding
detailed descriptions to the digital file to make it searchable from a
computer. Capturing details for each photo is a slow process that can take
many years to  complete. By December 2015 we expect to have captured
detailed description/metadata for at least 30% of the collection.

decades and the rural and urban landscape of the day. In this newsletter,
we will give you a sneak-peek into the vivid collection.
