By the time Abdul and his team left, the terrorists had camped at Nakumatt.
Recce squad & Cops came and they seemingly were okay to maintain status
quo, but this status quo was not feasible as what was needed was someone to
go in and terminate the terrorists.

Cops were slow to get their act together and/or simply chickened out and
hence decision is made that if they are not willing to get in, then KDF
takes over. What do they then do, instead of waiting to switch over with
KDF, they withdrew enmasse, terrorists saw opportunity to duck and get the
heavy guns & ammo they had kept at their shops (what Abdul's team had
stopped them from doing initially).

So by the time KDF is getting in what do they meet? Cops pulling out and
terrorists who are now firing heavy caliber weapons (.50 GPGs and Sniper
Rifles), not those AKs they had earlier, and in the commotion a Recce
Commander is downed and in short order KDF starts losing their men.

How about that for a nice story :-)
