[kictanet] Thika Road Debate

Mugo,

The main problem is that no one is saying what will be done to address the identified flaws on Thika road. Response from Eng Kidenda which was shared with this list only speaks about everything being alright! he is NOT "taking the bull by its horns"! For example, Gaitho points to one of the many flaws i.e. quote "If anything, they still come with designs that make a mockery of traffic engineering. An example that comes easily to mind is the Museum Hill-Ojijo Road intersection. Nowhere else in the world would you have a flyover with a crossroad directly below it. The gridlock that crazy design causes in the rush hour is something else. "

When things go wrong, we should be ready to correct them and not try to convince people that it is good when it is not. As you say, we should build them now.....BUT build them well!

As Director of V2030, you should be telling us that the following steps will be taken to address these flaws, leave alone the debri and uneven landscape around the museum hill (is the road finished or not?).

Listers,

Been following this discussion and would just like to make a couple of comments:

1) The roads authorities were created to ensure specific allocation of responsibility which lacked in the past. So Eng. Kidenda as CEO of the Kenya National Highways Authority can be held responsible for the highways and trunk roads but not the urban roads which are squarely the responsibility of the Kenya Urban Roads Authority.

2) We have a great deal yet to do. As one of you intimated, some of what we are doing ought to have been done on the 60s and while that may be true, we still have to do it today if we didn't do it then. This even as we simultaneously move to the next level. The challenges raised by listers here are precisely what we need to raise the bar!

Regards,

Mugo

Waudo,

I did not say that Rural and Urban Roads Authorities lie in Mr Kidenda's docket; I said they fall BELOW has radar. Yaani, they are beneath him.

Overall I think Mr Gaitho is right. Kenya is a very advanced country in many respects but the poor roads are an enigma. One does not need to go far. I was impressed with the roads in Addis Ababa. Someone told me that the Addis-Moyale road is tarmacked smooth while the Nairobi-Moyale one, which is shorter, is not.
One factual correction though, The Kenya Rural Roads Authority and Kenya Urban Roads Authority are not under the purvue of Eng. Kidenda. He is in charge only of the Kenya National Highways Authority.

I think Macharia Gaitho is referring to our discussions on roads. For those who missed, the link posted below.

Let’s not gloat about building great roads until we venture out of Kenya
