[kictanet] Kictanet alive.. kickin, or kicked into KICTAnet 2.0

Churchill is a Kenya comedian and last week he attempted to explain the difference between Asian and African businessmen. He said an Asian chooses for example to be in the shoe industry. His Children and grandchildren too tend to be in the same industry. They get a fair understanding shoes inside out. They understand what variables to change if they want to improve on revenue.
Africans on the other hand may start with selling shoes and within no time they are into selling pumps, potatoes, chicken, clothing as well as drilling boreholes and anything that can bring money. They do not do anything in detail, he said. Soon the empire collapses when the Asian is still standing.
Now just when we were just beginning to dissect what the future of Kicktanet should be by drawing from the past, Robert comes up with the headline the King "is dead" obviously knowing this will derail Ben's thread and suddenly we all fall for it. We are just Africans.

Subject: Re: [kictanet] Kictanet alive.. kickin, or kicked into KICTAnet 2.0
Hi all,
At the Vilnius IGF, the "ICTs, the Internet and Sustainable Development:
Towards a new paradigm" book (see:
http://www.iisd.org/pdf/2010/icts_internet_sd_new_paradigm.pdf) was
launched which explored thinking on ICTs and the Internet, and the
policies that surround them - both at the local level such as in
countries like Kenya or at the global level such as at the international
IGF, from a sustainable development perspective.
SD touches on three critical pillars of development - Economic, Social
and Environmental. The book suggests that these pillars should be
explored with a fundamental principle in mind: "Development that meets
the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs." This book presents important
lessons that can help us adequately and efficiently conceptualize
present and future visions for ICTs and the Internet, and policies that
concern them. It may be useful as we think about the future of the
internet in Kenya.
Firstly, I would like to suggest, if it pleases everyone on the list,
and our moderator, Grace, to perhaps examine this future thinking
process using these pillars of sustainable development - Economic,
Social and Environmental. This can be done through asking listers, if
they had to conceptualize a vision to meet our present needs in such a
way that they do not compromise future needs (for our children) what
would be the a) economic, b) social, and c) environmental impacts?
Secondly, the book provides a framework for examining future impacts of
ICTs/Internet through what it calls the "systemic effects", and there
are three of them.
The first order (direct) effects are direct and immediate effects of
ICTs/Internet on our society, for instance, the direct effect of the
Internet on Kenya is the increasing numbers of online business that
generate more revenue for the country.
The second order (indirect) effects concern the applications of
ICTs/Internet to increase efficiencies in other industries. For
instance, the Internet can be used to improve the deployment of health
services or education, etc.
The third order (societal) effect concerns the impacts on ICTs/Internet
on changing social and behavioral structures. For instance, the use of
the internet to reduce cost and change behaviors through, for example
telecommuting, or online shopping.
Juxtaposing these systemic effects with the pillars of sustainable
development can help us to better define specific approaches and also
how to best conceptualize the future of ICTs/Internet in Kenya in a way
that Kictanet would like to see, and that encompases those whom the
policies will impact but who may not be opportuned to participate.
Using this framework, we would refine our question above by asking:
What first order, second order and third order effects can ICTs/Internet
have now and in the future for:
a. Economic sustainability
b. Social sustainability
c. Environmental sustainability?
And what role can Kictanet play to make this happen?
Perhaps, this sort of structure can help us discuss systematically and
in more depth, and can also ease Grace's job in sequentially documenting
our dialogue and thoughts.
Thanks again for letting a lurker comment.
Best,
Ben
