[kictanet] Don't bite the hand that feeds you!!!!

Why do newspaper journalist makes more spelling and grammatical errors while Reporters rarely make these mistakes, and when they do, they are almost always caught they are both the same people if not same intellect. Does this have anything to do with that some news comes in very close to deadline? How about "copy editors" who has to place the article in the space available, I think this is where a lot of problems occur if you ask me...

Now let us consider Programmers:

If you are one are a programmer, I know you've worked with both public and private code written by other developers and when you see incorrect spelling in source code it instantly undermines the credibility and professionalism of the whole source.

The problem can get more serious when a contributor or original writer attempts to later correct the mistake as this can lead to mismatches and errors. Sometimes the spelling mistake can be hard to rectify, as is the case if there is a misspelling in an interface, database table or column name. I guess we all have to embrace and learn to value and see the importance of taking the time to correct spelling and grammatical errors and realized nowadays a spell checker is an essential item in the developer's toolkit.

While I agree with Bwana Ndemo - we can have cleanliness, freedom and innovation co-exist - why not?

Shem,
The freedom in Kenya today is not comparable to any country in Africa. This is all you need in life. The rest you can do. It is often argued that India's development amidst dirt and democracy is more sustainable than China. Creativity thrives in freedom. We may be dirty now but our freedom enables us to be more innovative.

Kenya ni mama yetu hata ikiwa nini. There is no need to fancy our neighbour's mother when the responsibility to make us better lies in all of us. Residents of Avenue Park created there own rules to make the estate clean and a better place to live in. It is several years since they started and the place remains clean. It all begins with one individual then the rest follow. It is not all lost for Kenya. We shall figure it out from a multi stakeholder point of view that when one falls a thousand are left to move us forward.

Leadership is not an individual but a collective understanding of a value system. Africa must wake up to this reality for when we do not have that strong character in the driver's seat, we must be able to wake up, relate to one another and face the world in chorus.

Ndemo.

Listers,

Can we have a structured discussion on this issue? The issue seemed buried by IGF, but is an important issue to discuss. Someone shared the draft bill on this list.

KICTANET Moderators?

In the newspaper article, the bill referred to is called the "National Intelligence Services Bill" - what role can the ICT industry play to inform this bill that is touching on an ICT issue (privacy in the digital environment? etc). A key issue in the current IGF debate!

Dear Edith,

Thank you for setting the ball rolling, in the absence of a framework on Freedom of Information we are likely to experience such issues, well Ministry of Infocom has done well but if my memory is still ok i recall the issue was somewhere in bunge, i wonder what Eng Rege has to say about that, of late so many bills have been going through, i hope the Information Society is not being left behind.

Best Regards

Listers,

Many of us may have missed the front page news in the nation newspapers yesterday given the flurry of activities at the IGF.

This idea poses many questions - is this the way to go? What are the implications? etc etc.

Coming at the time when Kenya is hosting the IGF begs for a debate and deep reflection as a country.

Can we have a public debate on this and inform the draft bill? The public hardly has the opportunity to debate bills that make their way to parliament (despite the new constitution enshrining this as a requirement - or is it a right?). I indeed hope this time it will be different given the over 20 million mobile users in Kenya - they have a stake in this.

Look forward to reactions.

Edith
