Brazil exported $40 billion of Soya beans to Asia. The soil acidity and alkalinity in Brazil is similar to Bungoma soil. Infact JICA has on several occassions pointed this out and even offered to buy all the proceeds. The problem there is no land to grow this on a large scale. They are trying to grow sugar cane in which they have no competitive advantage. A 50 Kg of Brazilian sugar sells in Mombasa at half the cost the cost of producing the same in Mumias.

Sugar is a bye product of fuel from molasses factories in Brazil. We shall never compete here until we know what to do with our molasses. Today we buy sugar at more than $2 per Kg when we can buy it at $1 per Kg but export soya worth billions to Asia.

Regards

Ndemo.
