SF BOARD DELAYS VOTE ON FREE WI-FI
[SOURCE: San Francisco Chronicle, AUTHOR: Heather Knight]
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors opted Tuesday to delay a key vote on free, citywide Internet access -- signaling what could be a long, drawn-out battle over the issue to come. Mayor Gavin Newsom proposed a free Wi-Fi system two years ago, and his administration last month revealed the outlines of a proposed contract between the city and EarthLink and Google. According to the contract, EarthLink would pay the city $2 million over four years for the right to build, own and maintain the network. Google would provide free Internet access, while EarthLink would offer a faster service that could be accessed for a $22 monthly fee. The terms of the deal haven't sat well with some members of the Board of Supervisors who say it's not good enough for the city. Board Budget Analyst Harvey Rose has said the city could run its own Wi-Fi system or contract with a nonprofit Internet provider -- but left the merits of such a decision to the supervisors.

we have ALL our masts manufactured locally (you pay around 15 000 KSH for a proper small mast per 3m segment). A BTS is about 50m (if you want to have the reach for rural deployments) and needs to be more massive (done by HYoung locally).
You still nedd the extras and even a local ISP will need a Gateway Service, should be peered at KIXP ....... so backhauls.
We provide Franchise for local "operators" whereby we outsource the operation and the maintenance of a mast side to a local partner in rural areas! This gives the option to have a unified system while still enabling the community!
We believe (as we are not a large Telco) that we can justify to blanket the whole country using motivated local partners .. THAT is what KDN is all about!

Hey Kai,
But I am not talking about a national company here, just increasing options for the small rural ISP outreach (where large telcos this far lack the business case justifying heavy investment you outlined).
I know salaries, office rent, security watchmen, etc are all needed.
BTW there are local guys who are making masts at Kshs 60,000/= each and they're great. Unless they should also be imported?

The BTS is not the issue but the O&M and the CPEs ..
