thnx for the reminder on ISOC-Kenya. Actually I had not forgotten it, I just thought it was relatively younger than some of the other organisations that have been around (e.g. Computer Society of Kenya-1992? vs ISOC-2013?). But then again, you could be right, being too old could be a liability :-) So yes, ISOC-Kenya should be considered as young and upcoming :-).

Meanwhile, ICANN and its affiliates does "own" the internet, not in terms of its (Telco/Network) infrastructure, but in terms of its governance/policy structures. The thrust of the argument is that if you want to impact/influence the governance of Internet, the ONLY currently available way is through ICANN ecosystem/affiliates.

This does not mean it is the best situation (esp. for Governments :-), but it only acknowledges that it is the best entry point for influencing internet policy/governance.
Walu, you have forgotten
Internet Society. Should we pull up our socks
in being more visible? :) ISOC is the formost
organisation that is
responsible for
Internet policy and standards development (Read IETF),
and advocacy and reach of Internet to all
corners of the globe
especially the global
south. ISOC Kenya has more members than some of
the mentioned institutions. Furthermore, ISOC
Kenya together with
Kictanet and other
partners is the convenor of the Kenya Internet
Governance forum.

For those who went to Brazil, I would be keen
to know how the Kenyan
Government was
represented. I saw some government ministers from
several African counties give opening
remarks.

What do you mean
by "the owner of the Internet is ICANN?" As I
understand, the Internet is made up of
Interconnected networks, with
hosts and
unique identifiers. The unique identifiers do not
constitute
the Internet on their own.

Best
