Hi all,

My condolences to all affected by this tragedy.
I think we should not beat ourselves so hard because we made quite
a significant contribution if we could think about it critically.
ICT was used in various areas including the following;

Social media to communicate and provide updates as well as
admonishing media when they practiced irresponsible
journalism.

Mobile telephony also came in very hardy with victims
calling and indicating their location assisting in rescue
operations

Mobile money came in very hardy in making contributions for
the victims which is now more that 40Million and counting.

Mainstream media was used to give updates as well as
mobilizing citizens to make blood donations.

All the above was possible because there were ICT professionals
working in the background. I guess we are not just interested in
making contribution for the public to see but just like the
hummingbird we made significant contribution albeit in the
background.

Regarding security in our shopping malls I think a lot of focus
has been on securing the shoppers entry points but little is done
at the back office supplies entry points. There is a possibility
that the weapons were delivered from these points disguised as
goods or materials. It is possible for such to be done by innocent
transport companies unknowingly even without the intervention of
the Shabaabs. All they need to do is hire a transporter to deliver
weapons disguised as partition materials or shop stocks.
Accusatory finger-pointing is an expected reaction from a grieving people. Perhaps calling upon all religious leaders to hold inter-religious prayers at Westgate soonest would help condole the affected families and all.

Robert,
There is absolutely nothing anybody will have done with ICTs after the
terrorists stormed the Mall. All IT gadgets worked properly. CCTV
footage is there and was aired on TV yesterday. The screening askaris had
no chance since the assailants forced their way in.
Perhaps what we need is more research to mount a camera on a fly (inzi)
with night vision to fly carefully within the terrorist hideout and
establish strategically on how to respond. Some flies could be loaded
with sleeping gas to put assailants to sleep. Drones do scan the horizon
giving military advance knowledge of the terrain.
Right now we should spend a few minutes to praise our uniformed forces.
They did a commendable job. In bitterness I am still proud to be Kenyan.

Hi,
As we console all those who where affected by the happenings at the
Westgate Mall over the weekend do we remain blameless as an industry?
