<p class="MsoNormal">Hi Listers,</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p><p class="MsoNormal">Americans have more money to spend on the entrepreneurship
and taking risk on innovation which is very much part of their culture. It’s
not about being stupid nor smart, it all gravitates to the real fact that
Africa does not have the money to play with, nor does it have the culture of
entrepreneurship to play with huge sums of money, but this is slowly coming,
with the applications that we have seen, and Africa will reach this level.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Given that gTLDs were also invented by the USA, it’s not surprising
that people in US took more chance thus the many applicant, besides, do not
forget that most of the new gTLD applications were brand protection names,
given that most companies as well are western it’s only natural that the
numbers would weigh in depending on the number of firms.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I believe that Africa will soon be able to come at par, with
the rest of the other developed nations, just a little more effort from the
government to the Private sector.</p>

Money alone may not explain the motivation of a large number of these<br>
applications. Quite a substantial number of them were about two key things:-<br>
<br>
1. Brand Protection. So Google going for .google is about just that.<br>
2. Category Protection or close affinity to it and wanting to be associated<br>
with it. For example .app had one of the highest applicants. From Google to<br>
Amazon to some of the largest domain registrars.<br>
<br>
It would be interesting to watch some of these auctions and the domination<br>
fights attached to them.<br>

I write to ask you to consider reminding your members about the<br>
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Comprehensive<br>
Study on the Problem of and Response to Cybercrime recently<br>
mandated by United Nations General Assembly Resolution [3]65/230.<br>
The current deadline for completed questionnaires to be uploaded<br>
to the [4]UNODC Cybercrime portal is 30 June 2012.<br>
This study was recently [5]launched by the UNODC Executive<br>
Director at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Member states will<br>
look to the completed study with a view to strengthen existing<br>
and to propose new national and international legal or other<br>
responses to cybercrime. As you may recall from previous<br>
correspondence, UNODC is currently inviting selected private<br>
sector organizations to complete a questionnaire related to their<br>
experience and perceptions of cybercrime. The questionnaire<br>
represents a unique opportunity for private sector organizations<br>
to ensure that their views are reported and reflected in the<br>
study.<br>
Potential participants should register at<br>

a survey for completion.<br>
Be assured that information provided in response to the<br>
