Ali's point is very clear, and that has been observed the world over. The
Cross Community Working group on ICANN Accountability (CCWG) to which many
Kenyans were members has debated that issue for months. Actually, the whole
idea of the IANA function transition from oversight of the US NTIA was to
show commitment that the US is ready to let go control of the Internet.

Ali, even after the IANA transition, the US will still have much control of
the process because ICANN is a California based organisation, registered
and answerable to Californian company law.

.eu is sponsored by European Commission and operated by EURid, which is a
consortium of several ccTLDs in UE. EURid was appointed by the European
Commission to run the string.

On the other hand, DotAsia is a consortium of official top-level domain
authorities around Asian (e.g. “.cn” in China, “.jp” in Japan, “.in” in
India, “.sg” in Singapore”, etc.) and regional Internet organizations (e.g.
APNIC, APTLD, APIA, etc.).

As you can see, there is no one size fits all approach for geoTLDs.
