[kictanet] Fw: [isoc_ke] The battle for control of Kenyan Digital airspace

IMHO the big 3 (NMG, RMG and SMG) made a big strategic and financial
mistake in opting to go for a Signal Distribution license. Given that only
3 are to be issued in the country, and that the license comes with heavy
obligations to provide countrywide coverage based on certain timelines, the
level of investment required is huge. When this is weighed against revenues
that would be earned from leasing out digital channels to broadcasters -
the return on investment is at a distant horizon, and profits would be
somewhat limited due to the costs of maintaining, operating the
infrastructure.

If the 3 had stuck to what they do best - generate content that has
eyeballs fixed on their channels, and thereby earn their advertising
revenue; then go further to introduce premium content, interactive content
(and even internet access) out of which they can create additional revenue
streams they would be laughing all the way to the bank...

Now they are digging themselves deeper and deeper into debt (and potential
losses) - I smell a few bankruptcies in the near future - watch this
space....
