Interesting read Sidney and Matunda, thank you for sharing. 

Covert practices by enterprises will work and only for so long.
A case we now have for example is the BBC saga dragging in the old time BAT and Mastermind wars. 
While the real covert players of those days may not even be there to answer to the claims, heavy prices will be paid now by the enterprises. It also points to Government and political protection to the then Goliaths to give a conducive playing field.

Long-term customer centric enterprises keep in mind that playing fields change.

The biggest loss for innovation is that this killer maneuvers seem to come from the "big enterprises"  the Goliaths now who should have a great stake in promoting innovation to grow the industry as a whole - which would possibly give them even more business and make them even bigger.
You would note that such stories elicit little response perhaps there are many pipers for Goliath! 

There has got to be a way to co-exist considering that innovators thrive from stepping on the shoulders of and paths trampled upon by Goliaths who were once Davids!

It would be of interest to hear from the Goliaths for David's sake!

If I were Safaricom, I would seriously consider acquiring those companies with innovative solutions as a way of staying ahead; with its deep pockets and influence in the market, you can bet the company can lead the way if it desires so. ... smothering and suffocating others can only come to bite later on as innovation would always find its way into the market.
