Just to pick on your point number 2.
There is a theory amongst some educated Kenyans which claims that the hyacinth in Kisumu started growing in early eighties after breakdown of sewage treatment plant.Similarly the Nairobi Dam one started when farmers below Langata Estate tampered with sewer system in order to irrigate their shambas.
Some food for thought!
