Dear Colleagues,
The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Union
Commission (AUC) in collaboration with the Government of Arab Republic
of Egypt through the Ministry of Communications and Information
Technology and the sub-regional IGFs will organize the first African
Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF 2012) from 3 to 4 October 2012 in
Cairo, Egypt. The event is expected to bring together participants from
all over the continent to define Africa’s collective common position on
Internet Governance and share best practices based on the results of
national and sub-regional consultations.
//
Building on the United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals, and
the mandate given at the Second Phase of the World Summit on the
Information Society in Tunis (WSIS), the IGF is a United Nations
led-activity initiated in 2006 as a global platform for
multi-stakeholder policy dialogue on prevailing and emerging issues on
Internet governance in order to foster the sustainability, robustness,
security, stability, and development of the Internet.
The Internet Governance space in Africa has been very active during the
WSIS process with regional meetings held from 2002 to 2005 in Bamako,
Accra, Addis Ababa, Cairo, Johannesburg, Douala and Tunis. Moreover,
within the IGF global initiative, Africa has hosted IGF in Egypt (2009)
and in Kenya (2011).
Presently, there are five regional initiatives that are ongoing in
Africa; which include the West Africa Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF),
the East Africa Internet Governance Forum (EAIGF), Forum de Gouvernance
de l'Internet en Afrique Centrale (FGI-CA), the Southern Africa Internet
Governance Forum (SAIGF) and the North Africa Internet Governance Forum
(NAIGF). These sub-regional initiatives, which have organized meetings
in 2012, together with AfIGF will support and promote the consolidation
of on-going national initiatives and also reach out to continental and
global stakeholders for Africa’s better participation in IGF.
Accordingly and in view of the pivotal role that you and your
institution are playing in the promotion of the Internet Governance
agenda, I am pleased to invite you, on behalf of the Director of the ICT
and Science and Techology Division of ECA, to participate in AfIGF 2012.
Please note that the Forum will bring together representatives from
governments, businesses and non-governmental organisations for two days
of intensive discussions about the state of Internet Governance in
Africa and developing strategies on best practices. The Forum will also
attract participation from related international and regional
organizations and partners. Moreover, AfIGF 2012 is the first of its
kind addressing IG issues on the continent providing substantive input
to the global IGF process and Africa’s participation in other
international fora.
The organizers would appreciate if you could kindly confirm your
participation by 20 August 2012. The registration form is attached. The
programme and list of hotels will be soon made available at the
conference website. Please circulate this information to all your
colleagues and network members.
We hope to hear from you soon.
